Birthing Picasso opens November 6, creating new opportunities for Round Rock businesses

The project’s first phase connects art, STEAM education, and international partnerships to support tourism, attract investment, and help Texas businesses expand into new markets.

The first phase of Birthing Picasso will officially open on November 6, 2026, at The City Arts Center in downtown Round Rock, launching a long-term initiative designed to bring cultural experiences, family visits and international connections to the city. An innovation project developed by OverlaB Intelligence in collaboration with the Texas European Foundation, Birthing Picasso builds on the relationship with Málaga, Spain, Picasso’s birthplace, and its municipal museums to connect culture, education and economic development.

The exhibition will provide an additional reason for visitors to spend time in downtown Round Rock, creating opportunities for restaurants, retailers, hotels and service businesses to benefit from increased activity. Its broader programming aims to encourage repeat visits and connect the exhibition experience with surrounding businesses and attractions.

Education is central to that vision. Planned STEAM competitions, combining science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, aim to bring hundreds of families to Round Rock, engaging students through creative challenges inspired by Picasso’s approach to experimentation and discovery. These events have the potential to generate demand for dining, shopping and overnight stays, while offering local companies opportunities to sponsor activities, contribute expertise and build relationships with schools and families.

The initiative also provides a platform for new international market strategies aimed at attracting investment and supporting the international expansion of Round Rock and Texas businesses. By developing connections with Málaga and its wider business ecosystem, the project seeks to facilitate business introductions, explore commercial partnerships and create pathways into Spain and broader European markets. For Chamber members, these relationships could support market exploration while raising Round Rock’s international profile as a destination for business, talent and investment.

That regional and international outlook will inform an official visit to San Antonio on November 3, involving representatives from Málaga and Round Rock. One objective is to explore a potential tourism collaboration between San Antonio and Round Rock, building on the tourism and cultural agreements underpinning the Málaga partnership and the participation of its museums. Connecting museum experiences, heritage destinations and educational programming could help both Texas cities develop complementary visitor itineraries, reach new audiences and create shared opportunities for their business communities.

The November 6 opening marks the first phase of a broader vision: using cultural engagement to generate visitor activity, educational opportunities, investment connections and international business relationships. Round Rock businesses are invited to explore sponsorships, visitor-focused partnerships and educational involvement as Birthing Picasso develops its next phases.
