The Solar Car Challenge comes to Dell Diamond

Round Rock was excited to welcome 24 high school teams from across the country participating in the Solar Car Challenge — including our own Stony Point High School team — during their stop at the Dell Diamond on July 20. The Solar Car Challenge is a premier project-based STEM initiative that inspires high school students to explore science, engineering, and alternative energy by planning, designing, building, racing, and evaluating roadworthy solar cars.

Teams from around the country compete and showcase their solar cars as they make their way along a 650-mile cross-Texas trek across from Fort Worth to Fort Stockton. Through the Solar Car Challenge Foundation’s Solar Education Program, students participate in workshops, mentoring, and on-site support. To date, the program has engaged more than 85,000 students across 39 states.

At their Round Rock stop, the students were welcomed by volunteers from Dell Technologies who also helped to sponsor the local Mighty Tigers team from Stony Point High School. Remarks were also provided by Dell Technology’s Leslie Harlien and City of Round Rock Mayor Craig Morgan. Elected officials and distinguished guests included City Council Members Melissa Fleming, Kristin Stevens, Michelle Ly, and Frank Ortega; RRISD Superintendent Dr. Hafedh Azaiez; City Manager Brooks Bennett; Williamson County Judge Steve Snell; representatives from the office of Rep. John Bucy III; and Executive Director of the Texas Workforce Investment Council Kaki Leyens.
