The Solar Car Challenge comes to Dell Diamond

24 high school teams participating in the Solar Car Challenge stopped at the Dell Diamond in the late afternoon of July 20^th. The Solar Car Challenge is a premier project-based STEM initiative that inspires high school students to explore science, engineering, and alternative energy by planning, designing, building, racing, and evaluating roadworthy solar cars. Through the Foundation’s Solar Education Program, students receive workshops, curriculum materials, mentoring, and on-site support. To date, the program has engaged more than 85,000 students across 39 states.

Teams from around the country showcased their cars at the Dell Diamond as they made their way across Texas. Round Rock was one of the stops as the students continued the 650-mile challenge reaching from Fort Worth, Texas to Fort Stockton, Texas. The students were welcomed by volunteers from Dell Technologies who also helped to sponsor the local Mighty Tigers team from Stony Point High School. Remarks were also provided by Leslie Harlien, Senior Vice President, K-12 Sales and Public Sector Business Development, Dell Technologies and City of Round Rock Mayor Craig Morgan. Elected officials and distinguished guests included City Council Members Melissa Fleming, Kristin Stevens, Michelle Ly and Frank Ortega, City Manager Brooks Bennett, Williamson County Judge Steve Snell, representatives from the office of Rep. John Bucy III, Kaki Leyens, Executive Director of the Texas Workforce Investment Council and RRISD Superintendent Dr. Hafedh Azaiez.
