Small Business Spotlight: Frios Pops

In honor of Small Business Week, we will be celebrating and highlighting local small businesses and entrepreneurs throughout the week. Today we are highlighting Frios Pops. Michael and Melissa, owners of Frios Pop share with us the motivation for the new business, hurdles they overcame, and other advice for entrepreneurs just starting out.

Describe the concept for your business and what motivated your idea:

We are a mobile business that offers hand-made gourmet popsicles. “Just imagine your favorite craving in the form of a popsicle!”  We offer vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, and dairy ice cream options.  We also have pops for pups – there is literally something for everyone!  Whether you are having a birthday party, company event, fundraiser, or just want a tasty treat, we are here to serve you.

We always had a desire to start our own business and the COVID-19 pandemic motivated us to no longer delay and pursue our dream with great passion.  There is no greater joy than being able to control your time, witness your hard work pay off and impact the community.

What was one hurdle you had to overcome?

The pandemic was definitely a hurdle, coupled with launching our business in the Winter, which is considered the “off-season” for ice cream.  We had to find creative ways to build relationships and establish our customer base.  Also, there were many aspects to running a business, besides the daily operations, that we had to learn.

What do you attribute to your success?

Our faith is vital to our success, as God has opened many doors! Additionally, building genuine relationships and purposefully doing what we can to make each person we encounter smile have contributed to our success.  The implementation of our Teacher and Frontline Worker Initiative was another successful factor.  We partnered with local businesses, who chose their desired organization/school, to sponsor pops and bring happiness to the workers that have sacrificed during this pandemic.

What would be one piece of advice to someone just starting out?

You are enough!  In the early phase of starting business, it is easy to question every decision and consume the negative thoughts (both internal and external).  Remind yourself that you have everything you need inside of you to achieve greatness.  Focus on the positive and pursue your dreams.
