A resort company with indoor water parks in Wisconsin, Ohio and Pennsylvania announced plans on Wednesday to establish a park in Round Rock.

The family-run Kalahari Resorts and Conventions says the Africa-themed water park in Texas will be its first venture in the Southwest after establishing some of the largest indoor water parks in the country.

The company said the new Kalahari resort, which would be built near the Dell Diamond baseball park, would mirror the company’s other resorts and include at least 990 guest rooms, a 200,000 square-foot water park, a spa and fitness center, restaurants, retail shops and conference rooms.

Owner Todd Nelson says the company creates “meeting markets” with the convention centers they build.

“There’s really no downside to us coming here,” Nelson said. “Every business should do much better after Kalahari opens.”

Round Rock Mayor Alan McGraw said the city has been working with Kalahari for the past two years on the project as the company decided on a location.
