Hello Chamber Investors!
As the leading advocate for business policy in our city, it was my great pleasure to visit the U.S. Chamber home office in Washington D.C. last week for the U.S. Chamber’s Committee of 100. This group of industry leaders meets twice a year to advise the U.S. Chamber and learn about upcoming federal issues. Click here for more information. I’m pleased to be a member of this group and represent the voice of not only Round Rock, but that of the regional Austin MSA business community.
The program this year was extensively focused on international trade policy and the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) agreement, in particular. The USMCA trade agreement is the proposed update to NAFTA between the United States, Mexico, and Canada. To become the governing trade law it must be ratified by the U.S. Congress.
Trade with Canada and Mexico represent the largest export markets for the United States, supporting over twelve million jobs domestically. In 2018, total U.S. exports to both countries was $96 billion with nearly one third of U.S. agricultural exports going to either Canada or Mexico. In brief, the USMCA makes important updates to this tri-lateral agreement with particular focus on modernizing digital trade, intellectual property protections, and improving agricultural trade. It was a highlight to be present for a conversation and presentation between U.S. Chamber President Suzanne Clarke, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, and United States Trade Representative, Ambassador Robert Lighthizer (pictured above). This powerhouse round table spoke at length about the impacts to trade with China and the great need we have to approve the USMCA agreement before the 2020 election cycle begins in earnest.
Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, and U.S. Chamber of Commerce CEO Tom Donohue, held a news conference on trade and the need to ratify the USMCA immediately following that program.
